We have received word of a study at Vanderbilt University to determine if fish oil supplements decrease afib. Below is the info they sent in case you are interested in participating and are in the Nashville, Tennessee area…

Recruiting Patients with Atrial Fibrillation

We are recruiting patients with atrial fibrillation to participate in an NIH-sponsored study to determine if fish oil supplements decrease the risk of atrial fibrillation recurrence.

If you:

  • Have atrial fibrillation with 2 or more episodes of atrial fibrillation in your lifetime
  • Had at least one episode of atrial fibrillation in the last year that was recorded by a health professional (recorded with an EKG machine or a heart monitor that you wore )
  • Are not permanently in atrial fibrillation

then you may be eligible to participate in a research study. You will not need to change your regular medications. Compensation is provided, including mileage compensation if you live more than 10 miles from Vanderbilt.

I am interested in participating. I have been diagnosed paraoxymal, have done my own test with fish oil and have noticed an improvement when I take it regularly. I keep a daily record of my blood pressure and arrythmia.

  • Alan Theriault says:

I have had issues with A-Fib for about 10 years now. I usually have an episode last about 24 hrs and they use to occur about 5 times per year. This year alone I have had about 10 episodes so far. I have been taking 2000mg of fish oil per day (I do miss a few though) for the last year or so and don’t feel that the oil is doing anything for me at all. I’m very intrested in what this study finds.

The email address listed even sent separately (using my e-mail address does not function. It came back undelivered.
    What should we do?

  • Elizabeth Jones says:

I stopped taking fish oils because of increasing attacks of Afib .
Having recently been diagnosed with AMD. I took one capsule of EPA, within 30 minutes a quite severe attack of Afib commenced and lasted for 20 hours
