Stay in Rhythm.® Atrial Fibrillation Patient Conference this past weekend. He is working on developing a study into the use of blood thinners on an “as needed” basis compared to the continuous use of blood thinners.
If funded, the study would use a smartwatch to help those with afib determine when blood thinners are needed. The survey is quick and easy to take.

Are people with AFIB like myself being told we need blood thinner pils when we don’t? If not what is the purpose of this whole thing?
Here’s a quick reply from Mellanie:
Not at all! The only way we advance the frontier of knowledge is through doing a study to test a hypothesis.
As the investigator, Dr. Passman, said just a few minutes ago during a stroke prevention session here at the European Heart Rhythm Association medical conference in Copenhagen:
“Right now, we give oral anticoagulants to everyone, regardless of whether they have a risk score of 3 or 8, and regardless of whether they have 6 minutes of afib or are in it all the time. Wouldn’t it be nice to know if we could give oral anticoagulants just when someone has an afib episode and for some period of time afterward, but not all the time? That is what this study would test. Participants would wear a watch that would help them identify any afib. If the watch detected afib, they would start anticoagulants then and go for some number of days. It would be nice to have some data letting us know whether or not that is OK.”
