Please Take This Survey to Help Researchers Study “Pill-in-Pocket” Blood Thinners Using a Smart Watch

StopAfib.org - For Patients. By Patients - Stop Atrial Fibrillation

We would appreciate your help with a survey to help Dr. Rod Passman, a researcher at Northwestern University who spoke at the Get in Rhythm. Stay in Rhythm.® Atrial Fibrillation Patient Conference this past weekend. He is working on developing a study into the use of blood thinners on an “as needed” basis compared to the continuous use of blood thinners.

If funded, the study would use a smartwatch to help those with afib determine when blood thinners are needed. The survey is quick and easy to take.

Please share this with others who have afib and can help with the survey!

      Hi Garry,

You may be interested in joining our patient discussion forum (http://forum.stopafib.org/index.php) to connect with other patients who collectively have a great amount of knowledge and experience. You may want to post your story and questions there, and you may also learn a lot from others who have already shared their experience.

You’ll need to join to see and participate in the discussion. To do so, go to forum.stopafib.org, and click on the big red button that says, “Sign Up”. Once you sign up by registering your email address, your preferred username, and a password, you’ll receive an email to confirm your interest in joining the forum. Click on the confirmation link in that email, and you are ready to go. You’ll be able to log into the forum, read the discussions, and participate. I hope that you are able to find others to connect with there that can give you advice, suggestions, and hope.

There are many resources on living with afib that you might find helpful.

Are people with AFIB like myself being told we need blood thinner pils when we don’t? If not what is the purpose of this whole thing?

Here’s a quick reply from Mellanie:
Not at all! The only way we advance the frontier of knowledge is through doing a study to test a hypothesis.

As the investigator, Dr. Passman, said just a few minutes ago during a stroke prevention session here at the European Heart Rhythm Association medical conference in Copenhagen:

“Right now, we give oral anticoagulants to everyone, regardless of whether they have a risk score of 3 or 8, and regardless of whether they have 6 minutes of afib or are in it all the time. Wouldn’t it be nice to know if we could give oral anticoagulants just when someone has an afib episode and for some period of time afterward, but not all the time? That is what this study would test. Participants would wear a watch that would help them identify any afib. If the watch detected afib, they would start anticoagulants then and go for some number of days. It would be nice to have some data letting us know whether or not that is OK.”
