Watch Dr. Andrea Russo Present about Weight Loss Medications and Afib
Answers to your questions about afib and GLP-1s
February is Heart Month, and it’s a great time to learn more about afib and focus on getting your afib under control.
The 2025 Get in Rhythm. Stay in Rhythm.® Atrial Fibrillation Patient Conference featured a whole session on afib risk factors that you can manage to reduce your afib.
One such factor is weight loss, for those who are overweight.
We were so grateful to have Dr. Andrea Russo talk about the latest in research relating to the impact GLP-1 and SGLT-2 medications have on afib. Both are used for other conditions, but have been shown to be beneficial for some afib patients.
Dr. Russo is well known to those who have attended the patient conference over the years. She is a professor of medicine at Cooper Medical School at Rowan University, and Director of Electrophysiology and Arrhythmia Services and Director of the Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship Program at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey. She is a past President of the Heart Rhythm Society, chairs the Cardiovascular Specialty Board of the American Board of Internal Medicine, and is a recipient of the Eric N. Prystowsky, MD Advocate for Patients Award from StopAfib.org.

During her presentation, she talked about:
- What GLP-1 and SGLT-2 medications are, and how they are used.
- The potential benefits of these medications beyond weight loss, including how they affect cardiovascular health.
- What we know about their potential impact on afib, and what studies are in progress or upcoming that could clarify their role with afib.
- What other medications are coming in this space.
We’re making the recording of this special presentation available to give you a taste of how transformative the Get in Rhythm. Stay in Rhythm.® Atrial Fibrillation Patient Conference can be. If you find it useful, you may want to consider purchasing access to the recordings of the entire conference (see P.S. below).
