What Patients Are Saying About Thomas Beaver, MD, MPH

I am a 58 year old very active man. In 2001, I went into afib when I was in recovery from a routine colonoscopy. I suffered from vagally-mediated paroxysmal afib. Ultimately, it was relatively well controlled by avoiding caffeine, dealing with stress better, supplements and Rythmol SR.

They performed all of the usual tests trying to find a physical cause for my afib. They never did, but they discovered I had a bicuspid aortic valve. In March, 2007, a routine echo measured my valve at 1 cm, which is pretty much when surgery is imminent. I consulted on the telephone with Dr. Beaver at Shands. He advised me that aortic aneurisms were common with bicuspid valves. They performed the diagnostic tests and determined I had a 5 cm aneurism.

Surgery was scheduled for July 6. I had a valve replacement, an aneurism repair and a maze procedure. Dr. Beaver was experienced with all 3 procedures. He was very accessible to answer my questions and to calm my fears. My wife and I both liked him a lot when we met with him. He was reassuring and just had a great manner about him. The surgery went great. With one minor glitch that wasn't their fault, it went exactly as predicted.

I had a full sternectomy. 4 weeks after surgery, I was allowed to drive and returned to work full time. 6 weeks after surgery, I was allowed to return to the gym, but had to take it a bit easy. 8 weeks after surgery, I started riding the road bike again without any restrictions. Less than 4 months after surgery, I have worked back up to taking pretty fast rides of more than 30 miles.

Dr. Beaver and his staff are wonderful. Shands is wonderful. I can't recommend him and it too highly
