Specialized Procedures and Results
We were the first in the country to successfully treat atrial fibrillation with Cryoablation and one of the first in the country to treat atrial fibrillation with the minimally invasive MicroMaze technique.
Electrophysiology Procedures:
- Pulmonary Vein Isolation (also called Pulmonary Vein Ablation)
- AV Node Ablation
- Cardioversion
- Pacemakers
Surgical Procedures:
- Mini Maze
- Cox Maze
Clinical Trials:
Two clinical trials are currently being administered by Dr. James Irwin, electrophysiologist, in St. Joseph's Hospital Heart Institute.
- The CryoCath Arctic Front Cryoablation Balloon treats atrial fibrillation by using freezing energy to ablate or destroy abnormal tissue in or near the pulmonary veins. A refrigerant is delivered within the catheter to cool the catheter tip. This freezes and destroys the cells at the entrance to the pulmonary veins.
- The Atritech WATCHMAN Trial is a device that is placed in the left atrial appendage in the heart to keep harmful blood clots that form there from entering the blood stream, potentially causing a stroke. It is made of materials that are common to many medical devices.
How The St. Joseph's Hospital Advanced Center for Atrial Fibrillation Can Help You
St. Joseph’s Hospital Advanced Center for Atrial Fibrillation provides a wide range of educational materials and free consultations with an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) for individuals who have previously been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation to discuss potential non-drug treatment options.
- No prescription or referral is needed to take advantage of the free consultation with the ARNP. The ARNP will review your cardiac history, related family history, previous test results and other clinical data that your doctor may have collected in diagnosing you with atrial fibrillation.
- If you meet clinical criteria for catheter-based intervention, minimally invasive surgical or full surgical intervention, we will expedite a consultation for you with an electrophysiologist or surgeon who performs these services at St. Joseph's Hospital Heart Institute.
