Clinical Trials:

Two clinical trials are currently being administered by Dr. James Irwin, electrophysiologist, in St. Joseph's Hospital Heart Institute.

  1. The CryoCath Arctic Front Cryoablation Balloon treats atrial fibrillation by using freezing energy to ablate or destroy abnormal tissue in or near the pulmonary veins. A refrigerant is delivered within the catheter to cool the catheter tip. This freezes and destroys the cells at the entrance to the pulmonary veins.
  2. The Atritech WATCHMAN Trial is a device that is placed in the left atrial appendage in the heart to keep harmful blood clots that form there from entering the blood stream, potentially causing a stroke. It is made of materials that are common to many medical devices.
