Dr. David McManus: a trailblazer in digital health

Devices and tools for diagnosing afib and monitoring it after ablation

October 27, 2020

  • Summary: Dr. David McManus: a trailblazer in digital health
  • Reading time: 2–3 minutes

We’re heading into the final days leading up to the 2020 Get in Rhythm. Stay in Rhythm.® Virtual Atrial Fibrillation Patient Conference, and we can hardly wait to share the quality and breadth of information we have for you—from the highest-caliber experts in afib.

Although switching the conference to a virtual format has required us to work around the clock putting in place new systems and technology, we’re more aware now than ever that it also presented us with the circumstances to make this year’s conference the best yet! In addition to our longstanding, trusted, respected faculty members, we are also thrilled to welcome some other afib rockstars from the U.S. and abroad.

Sunday morning, we’ll dive into Digital Health, which is always a popular topic at the conference. And David McManus, MD, FHRS, one of the afib experts we’re welcoming for the first time, will present.

Dr. McManus is a clinical research cardiac electrophysiologist and professor and the Vice-Chair of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. His research focuses on the use of technology to enhance the diagnosis and treatment of older patients with afib and other arrhythmias, and he currently serves as the principal investigator on four National Institute of Health or National Science Foundation-funded clinical trials and studies.

Dr. McManus is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the Cardiovascular Digital Health Journal from the Heart Rhythm Society and has authored or co-authored more than 220 scientific manuscripts.

On Sunday, November 1, Dr. McManus will discuss digital health and the monitoring of afib; specifically, he will talk about devices and tools for diagnosing afib and monitoring it after ablation, as well as digital health studies (and what they can tell us). He’ll also discuss screening for afib, the role it can play in preventing strokes, and what you need to know about self-monitoring with screening tools.

He’ll give advice on choosing and using consumer apps and devices, and for how to provide data to your doctors (and what to reasonably expect from your doctors when you do). Finally, he’ll discuss using apps and devices for managing afib risk factors such as exercise, stress, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and more.

In the world of afib research with digital health devices, Dr. McManus is well-respected. When you register for the Get in Rhythm. Stay in Rhythm.® Virtual Atrial Fibrillation Patient Conference, you’ll get to hear directly from him and other experts.

After his presentation, Dr. McManus will participate in a Q&A session.

Finally, we’ll wrap up the conference with a powerful Living with Afib session (during which I share information on topics that have not yet been covered), and then, a Takeaway Session (during which attendees are invited to share their perspectives around what they learned that may impact their afib or personal experiences that they believe will be of value to others).

Every year, the takeaways segment ends the conference on a high note, thanks in large part to what attendees share. This year, things will be a little different, because the conference is all virtual. We hope you’ll share what you’ve learned, and your takeaways, all weekend long in the chat. We hope to recap some of them in this final session.

Again, we are so excited to offer you three days of powerful presentations from the world’s leaders in afib!
