A new treatment for afib—noninvasive cardiac radioablation—is on the horizon, and it comes from work being done in cancer research and treatment.
Phillip S. Cuculich, MD, a clinical cardiac electrophysiologist and Associate Professor of Medicine and Radiation Oncology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, is the innovator working on this new treatment, and he’ll be joining us as a faculty member at this year’s Get in Rhythm. As the Co-Director of the Center for Noninvasive Cardiac Radioablation there, he has done innovative research into noninvasive cardiac radioablation for the treatment of Ventricular Tachycardia, and is exploring how to leverage it for afib. The New England Journal first published the reports of this collaborative work, and in 2019 the results of the clinical trial won Circulation’s prestigious James T. Willerson Award for Best Paper in Clinical Science.
Dr. Cuculich’s vision of personalized medicine drives his research passion: to ultimately improve overall health at the interface of cardiac electrophysiology and other medical specialties.
Saturday morning, October 31, Dr. Cuculich will discuss balloon ablation (including cryoballoon, laser balloon, and radiofrequency balloon), the evolution from eight-hour procedures to same-day discharge (and goals for a shorter, safer recovery), and special populations with afib (including young athletes and those with heart failure).
We are especially excited that he will talk about what it will take to leverage the noninvasive radioablation that he pioneered for use in treating afib.
