Professor Lip: THE expert on preventing afib strokes

The world’s leading expert on anticoagulants and preventing afib-related strokes

October 8, 2020

  • Summary: Professor Lip: THE expert on preventing afib strokes
  • Reading time: 2–3 minutes

In our last email, we said we’d introduce you to Professor Gregory Y.H. Lip, another international afib rockstar we’re thrilled to share with you at this year’s Get in Rhythm. Stay in Rhythm.® Virtual Atrial Fibrillation Patient Conference.

Just like Professor Camm (who we’ve written to you about previously), we have long hoped to be able to welcome Professor Lip to our patient conference, so he can share his expertise with you. Professor Lip—whom Expertscape has ranked as the world’s leading expert in the understanding and treatment of afib since 2014—spends half of his time as a clinical cardiologist. (If you missed reading about Professor Camm, you can access the profiles of our distinguished faculty all in one place as we release them, here.)

The CHA2DS2-VASc and HAS-BLED tools, which our doctors use to assess our stroke and bleeding risk, respectively, were developed through Professor Lip’s research and are now incorporated into most international guidelines. You’ll learn all about them during Professor Lip’s talk.

He has acted as senior/section editor for major international textbooks and at the senior editorial level for major international journals.

He was also on the writing committee for various international afib guidelines, including past American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) Antithrombotic Therapy Guidelines for Afib, as well as various guidelines and/or position statements from the European Society of Cardiology. He was recently Chair of the new “2018 ACCP guidelines on antithrombotic therapy for afib.” To ensure the patient perspective was reflected in these guidelines, he included me in the work of drafting them, which shows how patient-focused he is.

Professor Lip is a true expert of the highest caliber, and we can’t emphasize enough how special it is that you have the good fortune to hear him speak at our patient conference.

Friday morning, October 30, Professor Lip will present on preventing afib strokes with medications. He’ll discuss how you and your doctor can determine your risk for stroke, how doctors determine who needs blood thinners (using the tools he developed) and how they adjust dosing if you experience complications, and what you need to know about what the guidelines say.

We’ve also asked him to answer some of the questions we hear most frequently from people living with afib, including whether you need to stop blood thinners for afib and non-afib surgeries and procedures (such as dental procedures), and what you need to know about reversal agents.

When you register for the Get in Rhythm. Stay in Rhythm.® Virtual Atrial Fibrillation Patient Conference, you’ll get to hear directly from experts like Professor Lip. Be sure to secure your spot at the link below.
