The Economist launches "Preventing Stroke: Uneven Progress" report and webinar

Webinar features clinician, policymaker, and patient perspectives

September 20, 2017 (UPDATED September 21, 2017)

  • Summary:  The Economist launches “Preventing Stroke: Uneven Progress” report and webinar on September 21
  • Reading time: 2–3 minutes.

On September 21st at 10:00am EST, The Economist Intelligence Unit, a division of The Economist, hosted a webinar to release a report on efforts to prevent stroke in twenty countries around the world.

The “Preventing Stroke: Uneven Progress” report, sponsored by The Bristol-Myers Squibb-Pfizer Alliance, looked at efforts to screen for stroke risk factors, including afib, and reduce risks of stroke through awareness, screening practices, and policies. Mellanie True Hills, StopAfib.org founder, participated in this report.

The report revealed that, on average, more than 75 percent of people aged 65 and older worldwide are not being screened for Afib and other common stroke risk factors during routine primary care examinations, even though this population is at high risk for stroke. This analysis found that efforts to screen people for stroke risk factors, including Afib, varied widely, even in countries with established health care and developed economies.
