According to a new study published in the August 5, 2008, issue of Circulation, light exercise, such as walking a few blocks or dancing, can help prevent atrial fibrillation in older people.

The researchers studied more than 5,000 older adults. The risk of atrial fibrillation was 22 percent lower in those walking just five to 11 blocks a week compared to those walking less. It was 24 percent lower in those walking 12 to 23 blocks weekly, 33 percent lower for those walking 24 to 59 blocks weekly, and 44 percent lower for those walking 60 or more blocks a week.
