About
Lishan Aklog, MD, is the Director of The Cardiovascular Center and Chief of Cardiovascular Surgery at the Heart & Lung Institute of St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center.
An honors graduate of Harvard College and Medical School, he completed his general and cardiothoracic surgical residency training at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
He then served the American Association of Thoracic Surgery as a Traveling Fellow, receiving advanced training in mitral valve repair and aortic root surgery under the tutelage of Professors Carpentier and Yacoub in Europe. He returned to join the Harvard faculty at Brigham and Women’s Hospital where he developed programs in off-pump coronary bypass surgery and robotic heart surgery.
In 2002, he was recruited to the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City where he served as Associate Chief of Cardiac Surgery.
Dr. Aklog has established himself as a leader in innovative approaches to heart surgery, including mitral valve repair, beating heart bypass surgery using arterial grafts, minimally- invasive and robotic surgery and pulmonary embolectomy. He has published numerous journal articles and book chapters, including seminal clinical papers on ischemic mitral regurgitation and pulmonary mbolectomy.
Dr. Aklog has been invited to lecture and operate throughout the world and holds leadership positions in many national and international organizations. He has received numerous awards and is a perennial honoree in Castle Connolly’s, America’s Top Doctors.
