Specialized Procedures and Results

At Western Cardiovascular Associates your treatment options are based on your treatment needs. Because of advancing medical technology and the experience and expertise of our surgeons, many of our treatment options involve minimally invasive surgeries. Minimally invasive surgeries offer the same efficacy of open heart or open chest procedures, without the trauma of exposing the heart during surgery and without having to separate the breastbone or ribcage. If an open heart or open chest procedure is necessary, you can rest assured that you will receive superior care in our state-of-the-art surgical facilities.

If you have no underlying heart disease that requires an open heart procedure, you may be able to undergo minimally invasive surgery to cure atrial fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation can be cured. Whether you receive an open heart Maze procedure or a minimally invasive Mini-Maze surgery, Dr. Affleck's surgical ablation procedure is 90% successful with patients who have intermittent atrial fibrillation, and 70% successful with patients suffering from continuous AF. Dr. Affleck's success rates are higher because he trained at Washington University School of Medicine (where the Maze surgery was developed) and has performed more curative procedures than any other surgeon in the western United States. He is now one of the foremost instructors of these procedures training other cardiothoracic surgeons in the Maze and Mini-Maze surgery.
